On
June 28, 2013, a lightning storm sparked the Yarnell Hill Fire near
Prescott. The fire quickly exploded and covered more than 13 square
miles. Hundreds were evacuated from Yarnell and surrounding areas as the
blaze took down homes and everything else in its path.
The
Granite Mountain Hotshots were called to fight the blaze, and as they
descended from a mountain ridge into a bowl they became trapped. Each of
the 19 men deployed protective shelters but were engulfed by a wall of
fire so hot that it fractured boulders.
The 19 men died around
4:42 p.m. on June 30, 2013. Now, two years later, we continue to honor
those men, and others that put their lives on the line every day.
