Now is a good time to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors with citrus trees to let you come and clean up their tree. You save them work and they save you money and you can repay them with some of the juice you squeeze. This season brought drought and flooding to many of our growers which means pricing will go up for us at the grocery store.
You can juice the citrus and freeze in small containers or ice cube trays (store in baggies after frozen) for future use. Lemon, lime and grapefruit juices can be used in cooking as well as summer drinks or can be added to concentrates like Hawaiian punch to create a tasty cool drink. These frozen natural juices add great flavor to seven up or ginger ale punch drinks and since they are frozen, keep the punch cold and will strengthen your punch as the cubes melt. I have some designer ice sculpture forms (found at dollar stores) that I use for parties and these make the ice look great in a punch bowl. Great to have lemon juice available in the winter for hot tea with honey and in the summer for iced tea drinks.
When used in cooking, these citrus juices are more flavorful than the concentrates available and the concentrates are very expensive and have expiration dates.
Try sauteing sliced small red potatoes, olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper and fresh oregano in a skillet---delicious and different. Combine lemon juice with fresh oregano, olive oil, salt and pepper and juice to make a sauce to cover and bake chicken in a 350 degree oven.
Citrus fruit can be sliced with the peel attached and frozen to use for a garnish on drinks or peel and section and freeze sections in freezer bags.
